New construction of a contemporary building in a historic setting
The new headquarters of Bremer Landesbank am Domshof was inaugurated on 8 August 2016 after three and a half years of construction. Caruso St. John Architects, London – Zurich, served as the lead architects. The construction phase was preceded by a long planning phase and the demolition of the old building structure. One of the major challenges facing the architects was to create a contemporary build of the highest quality that would nevertheless blend in with the historic surroundings without stealing attention from the nearby medieval town hall and cathedral. The result is a seven-storey building with a hand-walled brick facade in the Hanseatic tradition. BAL was involved in the project as construction manager from 2012 to 2017 and ensured that the project adhered to both time and budget schedules. In 2017, the building was the only building in Germany to be nominated by the jury of the Royal Institute of British Architects as the world’s best new building. In 2017, the building was also singled out under the German Architecture Prize.
